The new 70 acre McCulley-Bastian Nature Sanctuary lies along the River Raisin in Lenawee County. The sanctuary is primarily southern floodplain forest, known in this part of the state for its species richness. The remaining uplands are mesic southern forest and dry-mesic southern forest.

The sanctuary provides an excellent nesting habitat for neo-tropical migratory birds. The forested River Raisin corridor has connectivity to support wildlife migration and provide interior forest habitat for birds.

The sanctuary also helps protect the water quality of the River Raisin and Lake Erie. Near the 40-foot bluff running along the river, a fascinating carpet of skunk cabbage, jewelweed, and similar vegetation are present.
