About MNA Field Trip Grants
Nature-based education is core to the Michigan Nature Association's purpose. Since 1952, MNA has been working to protect Michigan's rare, threatened and endangered species by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. We also aim to carry on a program of natural history study and conservation education that began with our passionate group of conservation advocates in generations prior.
K-12 education is an important component of conservation and empowering the next generation of leaders. MNA makes $500 grants available for field trips to eligible natural areas including MNA nature sanctuaries, local nature centers, state parks, or other conservation lands. We welcome any accredited public or private K-12 school in the state of Michigan to apply!
The intention of these field trip grants is to provide financial assistance to teachers to help connect kids to nature and cover the cost of transportation and equipment for class field trips to natural areas. However, MNA protects many places across Michigan that are home to special species and fascinating natural communities. These special, and increasingly rare, features are fascinating opportunities to learn about and experience Michigan's natural heritage and ecological phenomena in action. Because of this, we encourage and will prioritize trips that are especially aligned with MNA's 'areas of conservation focus'; including...
- Vernal pools
- Native prairies and savannas
- Fens, bogs, and other peatlands
- Rare birds
MNA also acknowledges the historical and current disparities in access to natural areas. Priority will be also given to schools that have limited access to natural areas due to financial, geographic, and socioeconomic factors.
