In order to better protect the biodiversity of the sanctuary, including the diversity of wildflowers, songbirds, reptiles, amphibians, and other species, the ability of the forest to regenerate and remain healthy, and to protect the quality and diversity of the wetlands, Michigan Nature Association will again be implementing the deer management program at the Franklin F. and Brenda L. Holly Nature Sanctuary during the fall of 2020. Holly Nature Sanctuary deer management will occur during the two week archery season (Nov. 1-14), the regular firearm season (Nov. 15-30), and during muzzleloader season (Dec. 3-12). The sanctuary will be closed for the entirety of the regular firearm season and on select days when hunters are onsite during the archery and muzzleloader season.
The Franklin F. and Brenda L. Holly Nature Sanctuary was donated to MNA in December 2018.
The property served as a family retreat for the Holly family for decades for Frank, his sister Brenda and their parents before them. There is a shrub dominated wetland in the southwestern corner which is predominantly composed of buttonbush and alder. There is a hardwood swamp around the fringes of the wetland and the uplands are primarily composed of northern mesic and dry-mesic forest with a few small sandy ridges reminiscent of pine-barrens.
