Location Details
Martin Bay is located on the Stonington Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula. The area is a large coastal wetland, ecologically vital to the health of our Great Lakes and its inhabitants, with one-half mile of shoreline on Lake Michigan. Martin Creek runs through the property into a large shallow estuary in the bay. A number of different fish have been seen in the creek, and the area is also very popular with bird watchers. Some of the birds spotted include bald eagle, marsh hawk, and ospreys.
In addition to a wide variety of wildlife, the area is full of wonderful native plants, including the calcium-loving birdseye primrose. Sedge hummocks just west of the open water in the bay are amazingly tall. Sedge hummocks, grassy-looking mounds of sedge plants, normally take years to grow a few centimeters in height.
