Leatherleaf is the dominant shrub emerging from the sphagnum moss hummocks of this northern bog. Some of the other plants here include cottongrass, blueberry, black spruce, jack pine, tamarack, and labrador tea.
Howard and Leila Jackson were life-long nature lovers genuinely concerned about the protection of natural areas. Howard, who taught math and physics at Flint Community College, enjoyed researching bird migration patterns. His wife, Leila, loved to garden and was a high school history teacher. Donations from their friends and family allowed MNA to purchase this land and protect the bog forever. |
