80 Acres in Antrim County The Cedar River Nature Sanctuary protects 80 acres off Cedar River Rd., northwest of Mancelona. The sanctuary contains three distinct habitats: a river, a cedar swamp and a deciduous woods. The river serves as ideal habitat for brook trout. This sanctuary is also one of the few places where both species of spring beauties can be found. (The northern variety is taller and has broader leaves). A quarter-mile of the Cedar River, one of Michigan’s few remaining classic trout streams, flows through this pristine sanctuary. Two forest communities are present here, including a cedar swamp along the river and an adjacent upland deciduous woods. |
